Haboob Rolls Into Phoenix

A huge dust storm, called a "haboob," blasted through Phoenix and the surrounding metro area on Monday evening.  ?Around sundown, winds from an approaching storm pushed a hazy brown cloud over most of the Phoenix area, bring low visibility and gusty winds in its wake. At peak intensity the haboob caused wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour and a dust storm warning was issued as visibility in the area dropped below 1/4 of a mile. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or property damage, but images from social media did show some uprooted trees.Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport initiated a ground stop, temporarily halting all inbound and outbound flights.  Flights are expected to resume later Monday evening. After the dust storm passed, moderate rain began to fall in and around Phoenix, washing away the dust but causing additional problems of its own.  Some parts of southern Arizona have been dealing with flash flooding. The Mohave Daily News reported that rain in the Bullhead City area closed several roads on Sunday as runoff deposited mud, rocks and debris in low-lying areas. This is the second large haboob for Phoenix in the last six weeks.  On July 12th another large dust storm swept the city.

Hashima, Yawata Steel: enshrining slave labor in UNESCO World Heritage List?

This year again, Japanese revisionists are pushing the candidacies of highly controversial industrial sites to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list: the island of Hashima (Nagasaki-ken) and Yahata Steel Works (aka Yawata Steel Works, Fukuoka-ken) are both intimately associated to forced labor under Imperial Japan rule.'Nagasaki shipyard among old industrial sites named for World Heritage list' (The Japan Times 20130827)This year, the provocation looks even more outrageous: the Prime Minister (Shinzo Abe) is the grandson of the war criminal in charge of forced labor in Hideki Tojo's cabinet (Nobosuke Kishi), and the Deputy Prime Minister (Taro Aso) and his family still have links to his father's company, Aso Mining company, then a massive 'consumer' of slaves. My position hasn't changed since last October, when I mentioned the Hashima case under similar circumstances (see "Dokdo, Senkaku, Ieodo, Kuril,... Hashima?"): sites like Hashima cannot be listed, except as symbols of forced labor, for the world to remember past war crimes.Again, that's not what people like Shinzo Abe or Taro Aso have in mind: they want to discreetly enshrine war crimes in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, the way their predecessors discreetly enshrined war criminals in Yasukuni Shrine or Mount Sangane Cemetery**.I can't help but feel nauseous when I read the submission in the tentative list ("The Modern Industrial Heritage Sites in Kyûshû and Yamaguchi" - whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5399): no, I don't consider forced labor to be the best model for "indigenous modernization" or "proactive importation of technology". And I don't think the UNESCO had in mind forced labor when it chose its first two criteria for selection: "1. to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius; 2. to exhibit an important interchange of human values". Yet I do believe in a "Justification of Outstanding Universal Value" for Hashima, and I could even accept to see it listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites... but only to to denounce forced labor and honor the slaves who suffered and died there. Yes, Hashima could join sites like Auschwitz-Birkenau or the Island of Goree on the list. But no, Hashima shouldn't be remembered as a "Modern Industrial Heritage Site". We've already read these "Arbeit Macht Frei" signs.Seoul Village 2013Welcome to our Korean Errlines! Christopher Eccleston Up for DOCTOR WHO's Anniversary...the 100th

Oh, Christopher Eccleston...you cheeky bastard. The most reclusive of the previous Doctors expressed his tribute to Doctor Who yesterday during the British Film Institute's retrospective of the Ninth Doctor's era.  According to Doctor Who News, the London event was the latest in the BFI's year long celebration of Doctor Who with each month looking back at each Doctor's era.  A screening of Eccleston's final story, "Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways" was also featured and the event panel included the story's director Joe Ahearne, former producer Phil Collinson and actor Bruno Langley, who played Ninth Doctor companion failure Adam Mitchell in "Dalek" and "The Long Game."Typical of Eccleston, he did not attend the event but he did send along a written message that was read aloud to the audience by BFI host Justin Johnson.  The message read:I love the BFI. I love the Doctor and hope you enjoy this presentation. Joe Ahearne directed five of the 13 episodes of the first series. He understood the tone the show needed completely – strong, bold, pacy visuals coupled with wit, warmth and a twinkle in the performances, missus. If Joe agrees to direct the 100th anniversary special, I will bring my sonic and a stair-lift and – providing the Daleks don’t bring theirs – I, the ninth Doctor, vow to save the universe and all you apes in it.For anyone actually wondering, Eccleston will be 99 years old in 2063, the 100th anniversary year of Doctor Who.  Fantastic.Meanwhile, the BFI also confirmed that both David Tennant and Paul McGann will appear live on stage for the look back at their retrospective eras as The Doctor.  So at least McGann and Tennant can find some time in their schedules. The Tenth Doctor event on Sunday, September 29th will include a screening of the Series Four two-part finale "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End," while the Eighth Doctor screening of the 1996 TV Movie will be held on Saturday, October 5th.
