Capita complete takeover of Barnet Council

Yesterday Barnet Council announced that Capita had completed the takeover of DRS services *(subject to the court of appeal decision). This means that up to a billion pounds of our money will be given to Capita, in return for them moving hundreds of Barnet jobs to other parts of the country. This momentus decision seems to have passed many people by. This is no surprise. A judge recently decided that Barnet had not properly consulted on the project. The local Conservatives did not even mention this in their manifesto in 2010 elections. The Barnet Eye has campaigned tirelessly to prevent this risky project. Now our focus must change. We will now tirelessly fight to ensure that Capita are held to account and that any problems are not swept under the carpet. We will also do everything in our power to hold the current administration to account at the next Council election.

The sour puss from West Kendall

Ok first off, please read this with a grain of salt. I actually love the whole county, all of South Florida in fact. I have family in West Kendall and I am just responding because I have received a lot of rude comments here from people who live outside the Grove, telling us all how horrible the Grove really is. I'm not sure why they feel the need to do that, but I suspect  they secretly deep down wish they lived here. There is something interesting psychologically about people who continue to read the Grapevine when they don't have to, and then put down Coconut Grove in the comments section.I've been blocking a lot of nasty comments that have been left mostly about our little Red Headed Bamby and Clyde group (thanks Sandi for that name). Apparently, according to the comments, most people who don't live in the Grove enjoy crime free lives and beautiful sunny days 365 days a year. They live among rainbows and angels and God shines his light on them and has forsaken Coconut Grove. This is basically their words if you read between the lines. It looks like it's open season on us Grovites from people who have lived here and left here or people who don't live here yet feel it is their duty to read the Coconut Grove news (the Grapevine) and then comment negatively on our little village. I'm not sure why, I don't read their local news, yet they feel the need to come back daily to read every detail of our lives. Go figure. This one comment that didn't go through was: "I'm in West Kendall and I love it. You don't see the stuff you guys go through here. Why would anybody want to live in the Grove. It's so boring and surrounded by a terrible neighborhood and Miami Police are way corrupt not to mention you get way more for your buck here. I am so glad I only rented while I was in the Grove and never bought there."I am bringing back the Sour Grapes Award from a few years back, because if anyone deserves it this person does. I can smell those mushy sour concords all the way from his/her cookie cutter community out in the Everglades, I mean West Kendall. I think if he/she was so proud of his/her community, they would have signed their post and not been an Anonymous poser poster. No offense to West Kendall, but if anyone ever tries to drag me out there, I beg you, shoot me in the middle of my head and dump me in the bay, yes, beautiful Biscayne Bay, which we all see glistening out our windows daily in our beautiful little tree lined village, with the red brick winding sidewalks, where everyone knows your name and where life is really pleasant and beautiful; where we don't need cars and can just walk outside to galleries, outdoor cafes, the gym, and the movies; where you can actually walk or ride bikes, rollerblades or skateboards down the street and most people who pass by know you by name and call out "hello" to you, including the police, who know us all by name.We can sail, run,  and enjoy our many parks, and just dwell in our misery (according to our commenter). We can be miserable as we enjoy happy hour at the 100 year old Taurus bar or watch the sunset from the roof of the Mayfair or Sonesta, or watch the games at the Sandbar, Barracuda and The Grove Spot. And of course it's always annoying waiting for a table at Lulu, LoKal or Greenstreets, because they are always so crowded with West Kendallites who seem to like to share our Grove misery with us.We Grovites, must endure the Bed Races, the King Mango Strut, Halloween, the Arts Festival and all those pesky things that don't happen out in West Kendall. Oh yea, most of the 5K's and marathons pass through or little village, so we're stuck waving and passing out water to those people that run by, but hey, it's part of quaint village life, we deal with it.We also have to deal with all the trees and grass and cottages (and dog parks) and again, the bay, right there out our door with the large yachts, small crafts and sailboats, with Key Biscayne and Stiltsville in the distance. We have to deal with Hollywood film and tv companies taking over very often and Burn Notice does block the streets a lot, but hey, they'll be gone soon.As for boating, we do deal with all those boaters from West Kendall, too, who feel that the free Seminole Boat Ramp is theirs to use on weekends. They come in by the droves, blocking our streets, you know, South Bayshore Drive and SW 27th Avenue. Maybe we should start charging for that so they are not forced to come here and be part of our horrible little village.Speaking of boaters, we have to also deal with thousands of sailors every year as we are the largest regatta area in the country, for six months we deal with these luxurious people who enter the village and fill the waterfront with sailboats and races and all that sporting life stuff, reminds us of New England, but we deal with it. We also have that old rat trap the 150 year old Barnacle and it's huge front lawn filled with picnics and barn dances and cars shows that goes down to the bay, you are lucky to deal with your oldest dwelling only being circa 1990s in West Kendall, we have to deal with actual Florida history here.In Coconut Grove, we have to deal with the easy proximity to Coral Gables, South Miami, Brickell, Wynwood and South Beach where we are part of culture within minutes. We have to be miserable in all this, because alas, we don't live in West Kendall like our illustrious Anonymous commenter. And yes, we bitch and moan and argue with each other, but that's what families do, you see, unlike many neighborhoods, we all know our neighbors, who are our friends (and family),  so we do family things like argue, disagree and bitch and moan. It's part of life. If we didn't know each other and didn't care about our community, we wouldn't be so passionate. For those of you who love and live in beautiful downtown West Kendall, more power to you. I prefer to dwell in my misery here. I like having an actual community, a village with an actual name.Oh, and no comments will be published on this post that are put downs to our little Grove community, because frankly,  if you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything. We don't post put downs in the West Kendall Gazette. If we are stupid enough to live here in little old Coconut Grove, why make fun of us? Huh? Anonymous person from West Kendall? Why? Ignorance is bliss. We are happy being ignorant. Leave us in our bliss. From Living the Law of Attraction: "Whenever somebody puts you down, keep in mind that they are speaking from within the boundaries of their own limitations. Ignore them."

Obit: Taylor Mead, 1924-2013 (American writer, actor, performer)

* Underground film icon, Taylor Mead, has died aged 88. The elfin poet and Andy Warhol superstar had Neptune in Leo exactly conjunct his IC and ruling his Pisces Moon.

Taylor Mead (December 31, 1924 – May 8, 2013) was an American writer, actor, and performer. Mead appeared in several of Andy Warhol's underground films filmed at Warhol's Factory, including Tarzan and Jane Regained... Sort of (1963) and Taylor Mead's Ass (1964).

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mead appeared in Ron Rice's beat classic The Flower Thief (1960), in which he "traipses with an elfin glee through a lost San Francisco of smoke-stuffed North Beach cafes..." Film critic P. Adams Sitney called The Flower Thief "the purest expression of the Beat sensibility in cinema." Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman called Mead "the first underground movie star."

In the mid 1970s, Gary Weis made some short films of Mead talking to his cat in the kitchen of his Ludlow Street apartment on the Lower East Side called Taylor Mead's Cat. One film of Mead extemporizing on the virtues of constant television watching aired during the second season of Saturday Night Live.

Mead lived in the Lower East Side of Manhattan on Ludlow Street and read his poetry regularly at The Bowery Poetry Club. His last book of poems (published by Bowery Poetry Books) is called A Simple Country Girl. He was the subject of a documentary entitled Excavating Taylor Mead, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005. The film shows him engaging in his nightly habit of feeding stray cats in an East Village cemetery after bar-hopping, and features a cameo by Jim Jarmusch, in which Jarmusch explains that once, when Mead went to Europe, he enlisted Jarmusch's brother to feed the cemetery cats in Mead's absence.

Mead appeared in the final segment of Jarmusch's 2003 film Coffee and Cigarettes. He has been "a beloved icon of the downtown New York art scene since the 60s."

Mead died on May 8, 2013 in Colorado, having moved from his Ludlow Street apartment in Manhattan earlier this spring, "after many years of a dispute with his landlord."

Playoffs: Blackhawks vs RedWings - Game 1 Win Recap

"The Toxic Waltz"The western conference semifinals opened up, Wednesday night in the United Center, with the Blackhawks facing their most hated rival, the Detoilet Red Wings. This might be the storybook ending that the Hawks/Wings rivalry deserves. Next season they will be off to feast on the Eastern Conference, leaving the Hawks to muck it up with the likes of the St. Louis Blues. Repulsive, I know. Anyhow, the Wings were coming off an emotional game 7 and series win against the Anaheim Ducks. For that, I must thank the Wings. That was now in the past, so back to hating the Wings. Dave Bolland was replacing Stalberg in the lineup, as well as Carcillo making an appearance. This was going to, no doubt, be a rough series, but championships don't come easy. Live from the United Center in Chicago, this IS the Blackhawks and Red Wings. The Hawks came out and had a Jeckyl/Hyde type opening period, in game one. They were buzzing around the rink, early on, and even took a 1-0 lead. As they have been known to do, though, they fell asleep and allowed Detroit to tie the game back up. Some stupid penalties gave the Wings some prime opportunities in the closing half of the period, who actually out shot the Hawks 7-6.The Blackhawks made up for a 50/50 first period by coming out in the second and out shooting the Wings 17-5. Of course, none of those 17 shots resulted in any goals, but the pressure was seriously on. The Wings had to consider themselves lucky that the game was still tied, but that wouldn't last long.It was only a matter of time, with all the shots that the Hawks were getting, before they opened up the game. The third period was that time. They scored 3 goals, while out shooting the Wings and unbelievable 19-9. That was enough for the Hawks to take game one, 4-1.The GoodIn some of the first few shifts, Justin Abdelkader tried to throw a big hit at Michal Roszival and ended up eating the shaft of Rozy Val's stick. Probably dirty on Rozy's part, but sometimes you have to send a message.Something I didn't think I'd say, the Hawks opened up the scoring on the powerplay with a steal by El Capitan and Sharpie on Brendan Smith just inside the Wings blue line. Toews then got the puck over to Hoss, and who just rifled a one timer past Howard into the net.Dave Bolland was invisible in the first period, but he certainly showed up in the final two. He was obviously getting under the skin of the Wings, and had a third period break-a-way. I guess he really does like the third line. The Hawks jumped on yet another Wings lapse in coverage to tie up the game, almost halfway through the third. Oduya slid into a hole the size of the entire burnt out city of Detroit, in the Wings zone. Sharp found him with a pass, and Oduya surgically beat Howard on the glove side.I have to point out how nice it is to see Todd Bertuzzi in a virtually useless role. That guy can chow on a festering scrotum.Dream Warrior Kruger put the Hawks up by two, with 8:30 remaining in the game. The play was set up but Gorilla Salad's forecheck, and resulting possession. Mr. Gorilla Salad threw the puck through the crease and it squirted out to Kruger, who pitched it over a prone Howard. There was blood in the water. He didn't show up on the scoresheet, but Saad had several really good chances, and could have easily had 2 goals. That Quenneville wakeup call really did something for him.The usually solid Lucky Number Sleven saved a huge chance, late in the third period. A Crawford rebound was whacked over him and hit the crossbar. The puck was actually heading towards the net but Seabrook whacked it out of mid air and out of harms way.A late terrible Oduya turnover that ended up smack dab in front of the net, was saved by Crawford beautifully and then eventually turned around the other way, resulting in Shooter empty net goal. When it rains, it pours, Detoilet.Toews, Handzus, and Bolland were all over 50% at the dots, but Kruger and Frolik were a collective 0-13. Which clearly needs to be better in game 2.Sharp Dressed Man had three points and led the Hawks with 7 shots. Shoulder looks good, doesn't it?Just imagine the fits that Viktor Stalberg's speed would have given the Wings. The BadThat first fluke aside, the Blackhawks powerplay is still complete and utter dog dung. It boggles my mind how they could manage to completely screw up such great man advantages with the talent they have. The UglyThe Hawks allowed Damian Brunner to bring the puck in from the center line in with little to no resistance, just about 2 minutes after the Hossa goal. The defense got completely crossed up and there wasn't a defender on Brunner's half of the rink. Seabrook closed the space, but Brunner still got a solid shot off. Crawford made saves on the shot and one rebound, but the second rebound was poked past him, tying up the game.Andrew Shaw ended up with not one, but TWO penalties in the first period. Neither of which were even close to tolerable. With second penalty, Shaw barely grazed an already fallen Kindl with his elbow. There is no need to even put yourself in that position, though. Here are the video highlights:

Nigerian prisoners in Equatorial Guinea released

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan has secured the release of 10 prisoners held by Equatorial Guinea for various immigration offences, a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday. It said the release of the prisoners was the outcome of the two-day official visit of Jonathan to the country between March 21 and 22."The host Minister of National Security disclosed that such a gesture had never been officially extended to any illegal immigrant in Equatorial Guinea from any country."Due to the small size of the population of the country, the government was out to keep the influx of foreign nationals in the country at the minimum," the statement said. The statement said the Equatorial government extended the gesture because of ``the high esteem and respect" held for Nigeria and Jonathan. The government also approved the immediate issuance of one-year resident permit to the freed Nigerians and directed its ministry of national security to work closely with the Nigerian embassy in the country.

Scarlett Johansson director

Scarlett Johansson director, The path from actor to director is a well documented one (with varying degrees of success) and Scarlett Johanson is about to undertake it with an adaptation of Truman Capote's posthumously discovered debut novel, Summer Crossing. The film will tell the story of a 17-year-old Protestant debutante who begins an affair with a Jewish parking-lot attendant while her family vacations in Paris during the summer of 1945. Obviously, a controversial story and one that will be difficult to adapt, but Johansson is confident in the success of the project, which is currently being pitched to potential investors at Cannes."Several years ago I began working alongside the Capote estate and writer Tristine Skyler to adapt Summer Crossing, an inspired early work of Truman's which has long captured my heart," said Johansson in a statement. "Being able to bring this story to the screen as my full-length directorial debut is a life dream and deep privilege."Johansson might be taking her cues from celebrities like James Franco, whose trailer for his sophomore directorial work As I Lay Dying, a Faulkner adaptation, recently hit the web. Capote himself was far from proud of Summer Crossing during his lifetime, calling the work “thin, clever, unfelt”. Though the novel definitely works in terms of style - it’s easy to see how Johansson could make a solid film out of it.

Why Does C.R.E.A.M. No Longer Apply?

The NBA owners voted 22-8 in favor of the keeping the Sacramento Kings in Sacramento.  I would love to see who voted in favor and who voted against relocation.  Of course I have my suspicions.  I'm sure all the small market teams sided with Sac Town.  I'm sure the old guard that doesn't like to be pushed around voted for the Kings to stay put.  I'm sure the owners that want to atone for their ruthless behavior in other facets of their life voted to help out the little guy.  Whatever the case may be one thing is for sure, DAVID STERN IS IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE NBA AND HIS PERSONAL AGENDA ALWAYS TAKES PRECEDENCE!How else can you explain a room full of well educated, wealthy, innovative businessmen rejecting a deal for more money in a better location?  Anybody that has taken the most basic of business classes knows about the net present value of money and how important location, location, location is.  It defies logic to think there's a plausible explanation for their decision other than "we're rich and we can do what we want."There are very few examples in America where overpaying for something doesn't get you what you want.  In a capitalistic society the goal is always to make as much profit as the market will bear.  If someone wants to pay $100,000 for a Kia Sportage let them do it.  It's their money and their choice.  This exclusive club of billionaires known as the NBA refuses to let the free market dictate the rules.  In short their wishes (or that of their fearless leader) supersede the laws of economics.I have to admit the latest decision has me somewhat defeated as a 206 sports fan.  If you can't pay hundreds of millions more than a garbage franchise is really worth what hope is there for getting a basketball team to return to the Emerald City?  David Stern has shown his power is greater than the all mighty dollar and his ultimate infinite power can't be questioned.  Until Lord David retires Seattle has no chance of getting an NBA franchise.  Your thoughts?
