Day three Vikings college draft primer: A.J. Klein and Quinton Patton

The Minnesota Vikings watched a lot of players they could have used go off the board in rounds two and three Friday, thanks to giving up their picks in those rounds in a trade that got them in position to select Cordarrelle Patterson (who says Randy Moss was his role model. Not sure I'm jazzed to hear that.) Guys like Manti Te'o, Arthur Brown, Justin Hunter, Robert Woods and Markus Wheaton are all gone now.The Vikings will be back at the draft table Saturday though, picking 120th overall in the fourth round. A total of 23 teams will pick before they do.The Vikes addressed three big needs on Thursday night - defensive tackle, cornerback and wide receiver. They did not address their middle linebacker situation.One name to watch out for at that spot is Iowa State's A.J. Klein. Like almost all of these college players, I've never actually seen him play. But the scouting reports I've read describe him as a better athlete than advertised (white football players always get that label) with good ball skills and a reliable tackler. He averaged well over 100 tackles per season at Iowa State. If he's still around at #120, he might be the Vikings man. Kevin Reddick and Khaseem Greene might also be possibilities.The other name that jumps out at me who is still available going into round four is wide receiver Quinton Patton. Some draftniks thought he'd be a second or third round pick. Not so. Obviously no NFL team felt Patton's gargantuan production at Louisiana Tech the past two years (183 catches, 2,594 yards, 24 TDs) warranted being picked that high. However, I don't think he'll slide any further than the fourth round.Some fans will wonder why the Vikings would select Patton when they've already drafted Patterson and also have Greg Jennings, Jerome Simpson, and Jarius Wright. But if a guy with this kind of production is still there at #120, he'd be hard to pass up. And I bet he'd be more productive as a receiver in his rookie year than Patterson.

Ward 4 - You Decide

From all indications it seems that the race for Alderman Ward 4 is close.  Here's a post that may help you decide who to vote for.  There are 3 candidates but only 2 contenders, Kayce Williams and incumbent Allen Hall. Kayce Williams:Spring Hill Little League President and former Treasurer-Very dedicated to the Little League.  Would she have the time to juggle 2 time consuming civic responsibilities?  Which one is the higher priority, SHLL President or Alderman Ward 4?CFO of Firstrate, Inc and AIM LLC- Not sure what Firstrate is and can't find any internet resources.Secretary of the Spring Hill Parks and Recreation Commission-This one's a bit baffling.  She states in  the alderman Q&A's that Parks and Rec. is her passion and a huge priority but when a resolution to support the McCutcheon Greenway was voted on by the Commission she sits on she abstained and sited property owner rights.  This is exactly what Mayor Dinwiddie said in the Planning Commission meeting as they voted to approve a plat without the greenway included.  This greenway project has been a high priority for quite sometime involving both the Town of Thompson's Station and SH. Could her association with developer Donnie Cameron have anything to do with it?  Speaking of Cameron, he was spotted around the city putting up large campaign signs for her.  From what I understand one does not want to beholden to Mr. Cameron, he will expect payback of some sort.  Ms. Williams' treasurer is Leigh Gillig who happens to be Donnie Cameron's sole real estate agent for Autumn Ridge.  Ms. Gillig was Mayor Dinwiddie's treasurer when he ran for Mayor 4 years ago.  Ms. Gillig also donated $500 to the Mayoral campaign of Rick Graham.   To further prove my point about her ties to developers, as I was canvassing a neighborhood I came across several empty lots with her campaign signs.  Empty residential lots with campaign signs, hmmm!Allen Hall:Transportation Advisory Committee Chairman- This committee was formed at the end of 2011.  This committee worked diligently to create a transportation Capital Improvement Plan which prioritizes transportation projects within the City.  After several years of neglect by Mayor Dinwiddie, the TAC works closely with the Nashville Area MPO, which recommends transportation projects to TDOT.   Mr. Hall and the other members (Duda and Wurth) of this committee all volunteered to serve on the TAC.Website Sterring Committee Chairman-The difference in what the website looked like 4 months ago to today is daylight and dark.  Job well done.Board of Zoning Appeals- This board has the power to hear and decide appeals and requests regarding the City's Zoning Ordinance.  Mr. Hall was the only member to vote against special treatment for Wal-Mart when they requested smaller parking spaces.  Technology Upgrades- Mr. Hall took on the project to make all BOMA meeting packets electronic.  These packets were delivered to each BOMA member via a 3 ring binder with supporting documentation for each ordinance or resolution.  He trained City staff on how to convert hard copy documents into a digital format to be shared by the BOMA.  This also cut down the costs of having police officers hand deliver all the packets to the BOMA members homes.  He also helped the Police Department save thousands of dollars on the new PD 911 Dispatch System.  By being tech savvy he was able to go through the proposal and cut out unnecessary equipment and also identified additional equipment that was necessary.   Transparency- Mr. Hall did not sign a confidentiality non-disclosure document related to Festival Tennessee.  Related to the new website, meeting minutes are now available that include the voting record of the BOMA.  He has stated that one of his goals is to provide the citizens with an easier mechanism to view those voting records via the new website.Through this campaign cycle I've heard some good things about Ms. Williams.  She seems nice and personable but her associations with specific developers and specific realtors are suspect. The choice is easy for me, Allen Hall is a proven leader and diligent servant for the citizens of Spring Hill.

Jones can use multiple maneuvers to get to the quarterback.  Jones' bull rush can be perfected, making him a new cornerstone of a franchise that needs defensive help.  Datone Jones would be a solid pick here.2.  Giovani Bernard, RB, UNCAnalysis:Giovani BernardGiovani Bernard is the running back with the most potential in this draft. The Packers have discussed choosing Eddie Lacy with there first round pick. But, Bernard is the better option. In an offense where passing the ball is a first, having a solid running back to complement Aaron Rodgers would really benefit the Packers offense. Bernard would be excellent in the shotgun. Micah Hyde, CB, IowaAnalysis:You never have enough cornerbacks in today's NFL. Micah Hyde has played 4 years at the University of Iowa. He has a high motor. His cover skills are excellent. But, shedding blockers is a problem for Hyde. The Packers' defense was subpar last year. Adding another cornerback would help.6a. Robert Lester, SS, AlabamaAnalysis:Packers are not bringing back Charles Woodson. It is undecided who is going to step into the shoes Woodson left. Robert Lester could be the guy, as he is from the University of Alabama, where the emphasis is on the defensive end position. Lester could be able to step in as a day one starter.6b(compensatory): Conner Vernon, WR, DukeConner VernonAnalysis:So the Packers lost Greg Jennings. Jennings is a top ten receiver for sure. But, his injury problems seem to haunt him every year. Losing Jennings gave the Packers a compensatory pick. With this pick, a new receiver could be chosen. Conner Vernon could fit the bill. Vernon has excellent hands. He is also very quick and shifty. Vernon might not be able to excel in the NFL with every quarterback. But when Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback, you will likely have success. Adding Vernon would give the Packers another weapon on the offensive side of the ball.7. Khaled Holmes, C, USCAnalysis:Jeff Saturday has retired and this has left some depth concerns at the center position. The reason why I have Holmes going to the Packers is simple: Holmes is very versatile. He would be best fit as a guard in the NFL. Election Thoughts

Here are my quick thoughts.Mayor:Rick Graham got in the game early and never looked back.  One has to wonder if Hull could have pulled it out if George Jones had not run.  I suspect Jones pulled votes from both.  Mr. Hagaman did a better job than I thought.  Hagaman has a future in politics if he chooses. Ward 1:Any one could see that Amy Wurth was going to cruise to victory.  76% is impressive.Ward 2:Mr. Duda won handily in a three man race.  Charlie didn't receive as many votes as he did last time around.  Mr. McNeill picked up almost 400 votes from where he was 2 years ago.Ward 3:The Hudson and Zemek race was a lot tighter than I had thought, a 51 vote difference. WOW!Ward 4:With this being a three person race I initially thought that the two challengers would cancel each other out.  As this campaign continued it looked to be much closer but thought Hall would prevail.  He had a proven record to back it up as well.  Mr. Greer could have pulled more votes away from Mr. Hall than Ms. Williams.  It helps when you've got a Mayoral candidate (Graham) and a sitting Alderman (Whittenburg) investing time in your campaign-not negative just my impression and observation.Congrats to Graham, Wurth, Duda, Hudson and Williams.  Now let's get to work and make Spring Hill an even better place to call home.

Qatar nude statues: Greece pulls nude statues in fear of scandalization, Two Greek statues that were to be displayed in Qatar for an exhibition dedicated to the Olympic Games were returned to the Athens Archaeological Museum because Qatari authorities tried to cover the nude statues with black cloth. On April 25, the Huffington Post said that event organizers believed the nude statues would scandalize female visitors.The Qatar nude statues depicted two famous young athletes of Eleusis, which the Greek culture ministry had given for the exhibition "Olympic Games: Past and Present", which opened on March 28 in Doha.A few days before the inauguration, Deputy Culture Minister Costas Tsavara traveled to Doha and found that the genitalia of the two statues were covered with black cloth.The authorities argued that exposing nude figures would have been an insult to the customs of the country and a bad example for Qatari women who would visit the exhibition.The deputy minister made it clear to the organizers that the statues should be displayed in their natural state or be returned to Athens. His request was not granted and the Qatar nude statues were returned to Athens.

Now that the Steelers have selected outside linebacker Jarvis Jones in the first round of the draft, where do they go from here?The top needs are, in no special order, running back, wide receiver, safety and inside linebacker, with offensive line and quarterback being depth needs.There is still a lot of talent available at all of those positions, but particularly at WR, RB and safety, even though the safety position got hit harder than usual in the first round.My top guys still available in no particularl order would be:Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas StateKevin Minter, LB, LSUEddie Lacy, RB, AlabamaJonathan Franklin, RB, UCLAMontee Ball, RB, WisconsinJamar Taylor, CB, Boise State - even though it's not a "need"Justin Hunter, WR, TennesseeRobert Woods, WR, USCKeenan Allen, WR, CaliforniaJonathan Cyprien, S, Florida InternationalGiven that there are 10 players listed there and the Steelers pick at 16 in the second round, they should have a good shot at one or more of those listed when they make their second selection - given that there are several top players also available at non-need positions.If I'm making the pick for the Steelers, I take somebody in the second round who scores touchdowns - ie. a running back or receiver.The only way that changes for me is if Brown is still on the board. A defensive captain at Kansas State, Brown has been compared positively to Ray Lewis in terms of his leadership and sideline-to-sideline playing ability.But if the Steelers were able to pull off taking Jones in the first round and taking, say, Franklin or Woods in the second, I think fans would be ecstatic.
